Kevin Costner as John Dutton in “Yellowstone”

Spoiler alert!!! It’s the question that has been on the minds of Yellowstone fans everywhere: Is Kevin Costner really leaving the show?

After 5 seasons, the beloved actor’s character, John Dutton, is rumored to be saying goodbye to the popular Paramount Network Western drama. As news of Costner’s possible departure has spread, the Yellowstone fan base has been in an uproar. Fans have expressed their sadness, disbelief, and confusion over the news. They are desperate to know the truth and are wondering if this really is the end of an era.

According to Deadline, the hit drama “Yellowstone” is poised to conclude in its current form with star actor Kevin Costner. Simultaneously, the show’s creators are in discussions with Matthew McConaughey, and a number of the show’s main characters are expected to carry over to whatever new version of the show Paramount is planning. A Paramount Network spokesperson commented, ” Kevin Costner is an essential part of ‘Yellowstone’, and we hope that stays true for a long time. Taylor Sheridan is a masterful storyteller, and we would be thrilled to join forces with Matthew McConaughey, a remarkable talent.” Sheridan is also the force behind “Yellowstone” prequel series “1883” and “1923”. The decision to move on from Costner is said to have come after he desired to do less filming.

Costner himself has remained largely mum on the matter. The news has been met with a great deal of confusion and disbelief, as Costner’s character, John Dutton, is a fan favorite. His character is not only integral to the show’s plot, but he also represents a steady, moral force amidst the show’s many conflicts and struggles. He has been a major part of the show’s success and has been praised worldwide for his masterful performance. Fans have come to love the character and his presence on the show has been a source of comfort and stability throughout its five seasons.

Is it possible: will Costner return to the show?

While he has yet to comment, many fans are hoping he will come back for at least one more season. If it is possible for Paramount and Costner to come to a temporary agreement, we might get to see Matthew McConaughey, and Kevin Costner joining forces on the silver screen in what basically amounts to the most popular tv franchise in a generation (which would be epic!). But how will Kevin Costner leave Yellowstone? The show’s current trajectory left off suggesting that Jaime will attempt to assassinate his father by way of hiring an individual or possibly a team of professional hitmen. Could there be a plan to use this as an opportunity to write John Dutton out of the show? If so, how will Matthew McConaughey be involved in the replacement of John Dutton? There are a few different possibilities. It could be that McConaughey will be cast as a character that can match the energy of John Dutton in an attempt to maintain the current balance of characters in the show. The other possibility is that McConaughey could be cast as the man who Jaime sets on his family, eventually leading to the death of John Dutton.

Whether the show is Casting McConaughey or not one thing is certain, Costner’s Iconic performance as John Dutton over that last five seasons will leave a mark on the franchise that will be impossible to replace (even with a star as big as Matthew McConaughey). Fans will have to be willing to accept the new direction of the show if Paramount plans to pull in a comparable audience size to the first 5 seasons. Only time will tell if Costner will return for one more season of Yellowstone. Until then, we can all rest assured knowing that he will always be remembered as an iconic part of the show.

So… Is Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone? It’s a question that will remain unanswered for the time being. Unless we get a statement from Costner explicitly stating his intention to leave the show, anything is possible. Until then, all we can do is speculate and hope that he will return for one more season.
